Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer Analysis

The time has finally come! After decades of waiting and a time where many believed that had our last adventure in a galaxy far far away was behind us, Star Wars is back. The next chapter in the Star Wars Saga arrives in theaters next year and fans cannot be anymore excited. However, for the longest time, there has been almost nothing on the upcoming Episode VII; that is until now. It was confirmed that a preview would appear today and, as promised, Lucasfilms has released the teaser trailer to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As expected, this preview is quick, but there is plenty of content to see in the trailer. So what can we decipher from this preview? Well let's find out in this trailer analysis of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

From the start of the trailer, we are introduced to one the film's major characters. This is a no named trooper; played by John Boyega. This trooper seems to have found himself in the deserts of Tatooine; which is never a good thing. We are also introduced to Daisy Ridley's character (also unnamed) who is seen speeding off into the desert. While there is still much that we do not know of the protagonists; the trailer does give us ideas of the new characters' directions. It will be interesting to see just who these protagonists are and what their purpose is in the upcoming film. Though I sense that John Boyega's character will be this trilogy's main Jedi.

The Dark Side plays a major part in this teaser. The preview opens with an ominous voice over; which sounds a lot like Benedict Cumberbatch (though the voice seems to change in the second bit). The trailer continues with the appearance of a Sith Lord (most likely Adam Driver). He prowls through a forest and ignites his lightsaber; which has two additional points! Like many factors about this film, there is much we do not know of the new antagonists. Yet, from this preview, we can determine that Sith are indeed back; and they will be returning in style.

Throughout the preview, there are several things that should stand out to Star Wars fans. We see a group of stormtroopers exiting out of a vehicle; and they are dressed in sleeker looking armor. The trailer also features a group of X-Wings flying across a body of water. It is no doubt great to see these things again, but I cannot help but wonder if this is a good move. True, as a Star Wars fan, it is great to have returning elements. However it is disconcerting that we are seeing nothing new for the Star Wars Universe. Then again, perhaps there will be new things for the franchise. The preview features a new kind of droid and Daisy Ridley is riding an interesting looking speeder. Plus there is the Sith Lord's new lightsaber. So while there is more of the same thing featured in this trailer, there are other factors that suggest new elements will be introduced in The Force Awakens.

The final sequence in the trailer features none other then the Millennium Falcon. The Falcon is seen taking off while dodging TIE Fighters; and the main theme to Star Wars plays in the background. The iconic ship has been teased throughout Episode VII's production, and sure enough, the Millennium Falcon is making a return in the anticipated film. While this factor may not be much when it comes to themes or concepts, seeing the Millennium Falcon again not only gives the preview a sense of adventure, but it is a great sight for any Star Wars fan.

I have my concerns for The Force Awakens. The fact that I am seeing familiar elements from the previous trilogy worries me. However, this trailer still delivers. It may be a quick teaser; but from every scene, you cannot help but speculate what is to come in Episode VII. While I hope to a see a new direction in this series (and it is still possible that there will be one), I can say this just by watching this trailer: Star Wars is back!

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18, 2015.
