Pacific Rim Uprising Review: Rises Up As A Tolerable Sequel

Pacific Rim Uprising Movie Poster
If there is one thing I cannot but  love it is the concept of giant robots. The idea of mechanical titans has always been something I love seeing in pop culture. The only thing that is as good as a giant robot would be giant monsters such as Godzilla. So what happens when you have a movie about Giant Robots against Giant Monsters? The answer is a little film called Pacific Rim. The 2013 blockbuster was a treat to see by being a big time adventure for silver screen. Despite the movie under performing (a mystery that baffles me even to this day) the attention that Pacific Rim garnered was enough for a sequel to be developed; and that film has finally made its way to theaters in the form of Pacific Rim: Uprising. The first film was directed by none other than Guillermo Del Toro but this time around Steven S.DeKnight takes the helm for this sequel. So with a new director and studio backing the movie it seemed that Pacific Rim: Uprising had no shortage of obstacles to overcome; and the end result was an experience that was bittersweet.

Pacific Rim: Uprising takes place 10 years after the first film and centers on new heroes such as Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) who is tasked to train a new group of Jaeger pilots. The story of Uprising was simple and that was not a surprising direction given that its predecessor did not feature a complex plot either. However while Pacific Rim’s story was simplistic it knew how to use that direction while branching out to create an investing world. Uprising was not so fortunate but that was not to say that it did not try. There were several ideas in the plot that were interesting such as having a double perspective in story with the leads Jake and the cadet Amara (Cailee Spaeny). Plus some of the story’s twist were surprising and managed to keep things engaging. However what held the story back was its pacing as it seemingly rushed things along rather than letting elements flourish. If nothing else the plot of Uprising was by no means boring as, even though it was lacking in substance, it still found a way to be entertaining.

Star Wars The Last Jedi Review: A Dynamic Chapter in the Star Wars Saga!

In 2015 moviegoers returned to a galaxy far far away when Star Wars made its way back to the silver screen. What was once a six film saga became something more when Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrived in theaters. A journey began for the franchise as Episode VII started a new story that was filled with adventures, throwbacks and mysteries. Two years have passed since then and the time has come to continue the Saga with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Directed by Rian Johnson The Last Jedi continues the events from Episode VII and feature an array of exciting factors such as the return of Luke Skywalker. On the eve of the film's release I had the chance to watch this new chapter, and I have to say (coming from someone who likes all the Star Wars films) Episode VIII could very well be the most ambitious and dynamic entry in the Saga.

Continuing from The Force Awakens the story to The Last Jedi centers on Rey (Daisy Ridley) who seeks out a a weary Luke Skywalker(Mark Hamill) in order to become a Jedi and stop Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). As Rey seeks guidance from the old hero the Resistance are pushed to the brink by the First Order as Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Issacs) must find a way to keep the group alive. As the iconic scroll faded away and the story began I was not sure what to think about the plot. However as the adventure unfolded I found myself impressed with The Last Jedi's story. The plot kept true to the idea of Star Wars but how it utilized these concepts is what made all the difference. Story elements such as the Force were not only well presented but expanded upon in ways that were unexpected. The movie also took its time to establish each part to the story and,in doing so, created a sense of relevance for the overall plot. Now this is not to say the story was perfect. While its narrative was sound the plot could drag on in places and certain moments in the story were questionable. Yet despite the issues Episode VIII’s story was still effective as its twists, turns and sense of adventure were surprising; making it an engaging experience.

Star Wars The Force Awakens Review: Fitting Chapter in the Star Wars Saga

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there was a film called Star Wars. What started off as simple film in 1977 has become a pop culture phenomenon that remains strong even to this day. Like many I grew up with the adventures of Star Wars, and I will attest that I love this franchise in its entirety. Back in 2005 it seemed that the circle was complete with the third installment in the prequel trilogy: Star Wars-Revenge of the Sith. However everything changed in 2012 when creator George Lucas sold Lucasfilms to Disney. When this happened it was announced that Star Wars would return to the silver screen with a new trilogy. With much speculation, next chapter in the Star Wars saga would begin with Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Taking the helm for this installment was sci-fi director JJ Abrams; the man behind the new Star Trek films. It was hard to imagine that this continuation would come to theaters, but sure enough The Force Awakens is now playing everywhere. So the question for this Film Adventurer is simply this: is the force strong with The Force Awakens?

Episode VII takes place 30 years after the events of Episode VI. The galaxy faces a new threat in the form of The First Order and its leader Snoke (Andy Serkis). Unfortunately for the New Republic the famed hero Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has disappeared from the galaxy. This dilemma leads to the newly formed Resistance, led by Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) to locate the missing Jedi Knight before the First Order finds him. The conflict leads to Jakku where a mysterious girl named Rey (Daisy Riley) gets caught in the thick of things. Along with a former stormtrooper named Finn (John Boyega), Rey joins up with famed smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford) to get vital information to the Resistance before the vicious Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his forces catches up with them.
