Movie Posters and How They Can Help Any Art Portfolio

It's always good to have amazing art portfolio. I can't think of school that wouldn't require at least some kind of portfolio. So what could film do to help students get into Art School? Well there's only one area I can think of that brings art and film together and that be would movie posters.

Since film's inception, there have been movie posters. You could argue that quality in the form has gone down in the past few years, but there is no denying that posters still have a presence at movie theaters. Just look at the variety in these five different pieces and how each poster can express their own story and themes.

The Wizard of Oz:

Star Wars:

Aladdin:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

The Dark Knight:

So how can posters help art students? Well there are several ways. If you are going to into that kind of field, having some pieces inspired by posters would help.  I'm not saying you have to copy the poster in its entirety, but there are tons of posters out there that might help students gain some  inspiration. Just by looking pieces above, any art student could look the pictures and  deduce how the artist went about creating them. That could lead to a study on movie posters; which would be a great addition to any portfolio.

So while the concept has changed over the years, there is no denying that movie posters have an importance in our culture; to the point where I believe that understanding this medium would be great for any art student.  If you want to know more about the artwork in movie posters, I suggest checking out this article; or if you are just interested in finding an art schools, head here for more information. Who knows, maybe you can find a good school that deals in both art and film.
