Just look at the variety in these five different pieces and how each poster can express their own story and themes.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

So how can posters help art students? Well there are several ways. If you are going to into that kind of field, having some pieces inspired by posters would help. I'm not saying you have to copy the poster in its entirety, but there are tons of posters out there that might help students gain some inspiration. Just by looking pieces above, any art student could look the pictures and deduce how the artist went about creating them. That could lead to a study on movie posters; which would be a great addition to any portfolio.
So while the concept has changed over the years, there is no denying that movie posters have an importance in our culture; to the point where I believe that understanding this medium would be great for any art student.
